From Profit to Purpose: The Social Impact of agood company

16 Jun 2023

agood company was founded with a vision to create a better future, not only for ourselves but for our planet as well. With each product we offer, we seek to make a positive difference in the world, address pressing issues and empower communities. Through our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, we strive to set an example for other businesses to follow, just like we follow good examples, and prove that profitability and purpose can go hand in hand.

How it all started

At the start of our journey, we focused on creating and manufacturing sustainable everyday products. Our aim was to provide people with accessible alternatives and encourage them to make simple yet impactful changes in their daily lives. As our community of like-minded customers grew, we realised the power of inspiring others to adopt sustainable practices. This is why we decided to do more than just offer eco-friendly products

Knowing how important preserving world forests is for our planet, we started our collaboration with WeForest, an organisation dedicated to this cause. What we like about WeForest and what sets them apart is their holistic approach. They empower local farmers in Zambia by providing them with training and tools to diversify their sources of income while also actively participating in tree planting and forest protection. This meaningful partnership with WeForest has become a cornerstone of our journey toward creating a sustainable society, and we fondly refer to it as our "Project Zero“.

Our goal is to plant 10,000 trees together with our customers and that is why we donate a tree through WeForest whenever you buy a product from our sustainable phone accessories collection such as multi-charging cable made from recycled materials, MagSafe, phone wallet or or bedding from sustainably sourced textiles.

agood foundation

In 2020, we started agood foundation to further support sustainable projects worldwide. Recognising the need for education and training as catalysts for long-term change, our foundation focuses on key areas such as resource preservation, recycling, sustainable entrepreneurship, and consumer culture. As we believe in the importance of giving back regardless of financial gains, we decided to donate 4% of our net sales, not just profits, to agood foundation. Transparency is crucial to us, and we ensure that every donation goes directly to the projects we support, avoiding intermediaries and administrative costs commonly associated with charities. So, with each product purchased, you will know exactly where your donation goes (you can check this in the product description section, under ’ social impact’).

Save the children with our circular fashion line

agood company is dedicated to preserving a better future for generations to come and improving the lives of the world's most vulnerable inhabitants - children. The staggering reality is that approximately 710 million children live in countries facing the most severe consequences of the climate crisis. Recognising the significant impact of climate change on children, we have aligned our efforts with Save The Children's mission to minimise the repercussions of the climate crisis on young lives. This organisation was founded over 100 years ago and provides healthcare, food, water, shelter and education to millions of children across the globe. By supporting Save the Children, agood company ensures that for every item sold from our circular clothing line, an emergency food kit is donated to a child in need.

Support Malala Fund and women’s education with our phone cases

Education is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for creating a better world. Yet, there are more than 130 million girls who do not have access to it, particularly in societies where gender discrimination and societal norms limit their opportunities. With an aim to make a significant impact on women's education, we have partnered with the Malala Fund. This organisation distinguishes itself from other charities through its unique approach. Their educators and activists challenge systems and advocate for policy changes which would allow all girls to have secondary education. They have helped to place education for girls at the forefront of global agendas and their efforts have contributed to female education becoming a fundamental component of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By purchasing our plant-based phone cases, you will contribute directly to funding education for girls in need. Our collaboration's ambitious goal is to provide three years of education for 10,000 girls, enabling them to break the cycle of gender inequality and unlock their full potential. Through this initiative, agood company strives to empower girls and ensure they receive the education they deserve, ultimately creating a more equitable and inclusive world where every girl can learn and shape their own future.

Fight Period Poverty with Days for Girls and our bamboo toilet paper

Another way we have chosen to support women in need is through partnering with Days for Girls(DfG), an organisation committed to addressing and fighting the issue of period poverty. This term refers to the lack of access to menstrual products, proper sanitation facilities, and menstrual health education, primarily due to financial constraints. Period poverty has far-reaching consequences on the physical, emotional, and educational well-being of the girls and women who are affected. It can lead to an increased risk of infection, discomfort, missed school or work days, compromised mental health, shame, discrimination and stigmatisation. Through our collaboration with Days for Girls, for every purchase of sustainable personal care products, we provide a period kit to a woman in need. These kits include reusable components like waterproof shields, absorbent liners, panties, and hygiene essentials, which can last up to 2 or 3 years. Days for Girls goes beyond product distribution, working with communities, educators, and governments to combat the stigma surrounding menstruation and provide comprehensive menstrual health education. They aim to create long-lasting change and restore dignity to millions of women worldwide.

Fight the water crisis with charity:water and our stationery

Water has a fundamental role in sustaining life. It is essential for human survival, ecosystems and biodiversity, agriculture, industrial activities, sanitation and hygiene. As a vital resource, we are dedicated to preserving it. That is why we have developed a sustainable solution with our stone paper notebooks and natural grass pens that minimises water usage in their production process. However, we wanted to go beyond our own conservation efforts and actively contribute to addressing the global water crisis.

Lack of Water in Uganda

While we might take our access to clean water for granted, it is estimated that 1 in 10 people worldwide actually don’t have access to clean drinking water. This can lead to health problems and higher mortality rates, especially among children and vulnerable populations. Collecting water from distant sources can be physically demanding and time-consuming, especially for girls and women who are often tasked with it. It can affect education and economic productivity and perpetuate a cycle of poverty. Recognising that easy access to clean water can transform lives and drive economic growth, we have partnered with the non-profit organisation charity: water  (with every eco-friendly stationery item or reusable stainless steel bottle sold, we donate fresh water through them). Charity:water brings water to communities in need by collaborating with local organisations and implementing various solutions such as wells, filters, and rainwater capture. Additionally, they provide sanitation and hygiene education to ensure long-term health benefits. So far, they have helped more than 15 million people in 29 countries.

Stop armed violence with Humanium Metal

In a world plagued by illegal firearms and their devastating consequences, agood company has joined forces with Humanium Metal to combat this issue and create commodities for peace. Humanium Metal offers a solution by upcycling seized illegal weapons into a powerful material that can be used for positive change. By creating products from humanium metal, such as our humanium metal pen, the project generates funds to support initiatives that combat the spread of illegal weapons and assist affected communities. This innovative approach not only upcycles a destructive item into a symbol of peace but also provides much-needed investment in regions affected by gun violence. The project is aligned with the mission of developing sustainable everyday items and making a positive impact on communities plagued by violent crime. Run by IM, a Swedish non-profit organisation, Humanium Metal supports and empowers youths in making choices that steer them away from violence, and contributes to the fulfilment of the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. With each humanium metal pen or humanium metal pen refill sold, we allocate 25% of the revenue to communities affected by armed violence to help them become violence-free zones and foster a more peaceful and sustainable future.
